Council housing tenants will be offered prizes if they clear their arrears.

Sheffield Council’s drive to encourage people to take advantage of the upcoming two-week rent-free period will enter residents into a draw to win shopping vouchers if they keep up payments.

Tenants can win up to £250 to spend in shops as part of the scheme.

Posters, Christmas cards and advertising board are drilling the message home that those failing to pay up risk losing their homes ahead of the traditional rent-free fortnight, which starts on December 23.

Those who have a clear rent account or have signed up to a repayment agreement by January 1 will be eligible for the draw.

Coun Harry Harpham, the council’s cabinet member for homes, said: “Christmas can be a very difficult time financially. I know people in Sheffield will be really struggling.

“However it’s very important that those tenants in arrears continue to pay during the rent free weeks, so that they can try and catch up on their rent, and make sure their home is safe.”

Every tenant in arrears will be contacted and reminded to continue to pay over the Christmas period. Anyone struggling with money should contact the council’s income management unit on 0114 293 0000.
