DOZENS of Hallam University students are feared to have lost student loans through an email scam.
Students were urged to submit their name and national insurance number to obtain a new-style bursary.
But, weeks after applying, they found their student loans had been paid into a new bank account.
Scammers also posed as Microsoft tech support workers to hijack thousands of computers.
Action Desk reported on several South Yorkshire victims who unwittingly handed over total control of their machines during a so-called maintenance call.
The criminals are believed to have hoovered up personal data, before demanding £90 payment for a fix.
