A NEW contractor has been appointed to run Sheffield’s household waste recycling centres – but cuts to opening hours will still go ahead.
Registered charity SOVA Recycling has taken over sites at Beighton, Deepcar, High Green, Shirecliffe and on Blackstock Road, Gleadless Valley, on a five-year contract.
Steve Bennett, operations director of SOVA, said: “SOVA Recycling is a social enterprise, based in Sheffield, which offers an easy and environmentally- friendly way to get rid of bulky waste.
“We are really excited about the partnership because we know we can have a positive impact on the local environment.
“As a social enterprise, SOVA Recycling aims to do good in the community, both environmentally and socially. We recycle responsibly and we create training and work opportunities for local people.”
The company will take on existing workers but redundancies are likely because opening hours are being reduced as part of council cuts.
From April, sites will open for four days instead of seven, but all sites will be open at weekends and at least one will be open on weekdays, the council has pledged.
