Mandarin will be taught more widely at a Sheffield school after it opened special facilities.
Birkdale School in Broomhill celebrated the opening of its Confucius Classroom with a day of language, calligraphy and dancing.
It is one of a select few schools recognised by the Confucius Institute for promoting the study of Mandarin Chinese. Many pupils have already enjoyed Mandarin lessons with a weekly after-school club.
Kathryn Higham, head of modern languages, said: “We are now able to offer Mandarin Chinese lessons to a large number of students. It is spoken by over a billion people and will enrich the full and varied curriculum at Birkdale.”
