New Brooklyn Bridge marks link between cities
A SCHEME to build a replica of the world-famous Brooklyn Bridge across the River Don in Sheffield has been approved by city councillors.
The bridge had been due to be approved at Sheffield Council's City Centre, South and East Planning and Highways Area Board last month. But the proposal was dropped from the agenda until one of the owners of the river the bridge is to cross was given 21 days notice of the plan.
The pedestrian suspension bridge is designed to cross from near Kelham Island industrial museum to Brooklyn Works to commemorate the strong industrial and trading links between Sheffield and Brooklyn New York in the 19th century.
It will also become part of the Upper Don riverside walk.
Chair of the planning committee Coun Alan Law said: "It is very much welcomed. I think it will look great down there."
Coun Ian Saunders quipped: "Can we have a site visit to the original to see if it looks the same?"
