New bid for supermarket
COUNCILLORS are fighting plans for a new Tesco store in Sheffield - 18 months after they defeated plans for a supermarket on exactly the same site.
Local Lib Dem councillors in Walkley, Broomhill and Crookes have objected to a proposal for a new Tesco store at the junction of Springvale Road and Commonside.
Tesco have submitted a planning application to build a new store on the site, despite failing with the same proposal in autumn 2007.
Council Leader and Broomhill councillor Paul Scriven said: "Local people can be forgiven if they feel a sense of dj vu when they hear this news. No doubt they will be extremely concerned.
"However, I would like to assure them that local Lib Dem councillors will be fighting against this proposal just as we did last time."
Councillors are objecting on the same grounds as last time, that a supermarket on that site would generate extra traffic on an already hazardous junction, create parking problems and noise and undermine existing local traders.
Coun Scriven added: "Clearly a new Tesco on this site would have a negative effect for local residents and it could spell the end for many local independent businesses, particularly in the present economic climate."
