I REFER to the story about a woman whose blue bin was not emptied because it had a crisp packet in it.
When I did something similar the binmen refused to take the waste and said that the whole wagon load would be rejected as contaminated if they were to collect/deliver such materials!
Why are collections restricted to those items?
Collection points at Waitrose, Ecclesall Road, Hathersage allow most types of plastic, even accept carrier bags. So recyclers must be able to process a full range of materials.
Some councils allow similar materials in their collections, so why not Sheffield?
Is it because the contract is restricted? Why? And why deal with a recycler with such restrictions? Or does the council need plastics and their higher calorific value in the black bins to feed the Sheffield incinerator?
