Narrow escape at Chinese restaurant

TRAGEDY was narrowly averted when a car veered off a road and smashed into a Chinese restaurant.

It ploughed into a wall where customers usually wait for their orders outside the Sun Mei takeaway on Blacker Road, Mapplewell.

Luckily the restaurant was closed for renovation.

Police said a 33-year-old man was driving a black Volkswagen Golf along Bar Lane when it ran out of control and veered off the road.

The vehicle ended up lodged into the wall, only narrowly missing a gas main.

The restaurant's shocked owner, KC Choi, arrived an hour after the incident, late on Wednesday night, to find his front wall demolished.

He said: "Luckily we are closed for redecorating at the moment, otherwise there would have been customers queuing outside.

"The car missed the gas main by inches - we could have seen a big explosion.

"I'll have to try and get the money for the wall from his insurance company."

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said "early reports" suggested the driver had lost control of his car.

She said: "The driver, a 33-year-old man from the New Lodge area of Barnsley, received an injury to his shoulder and he was treated at hospital.

"He was later arrested for driving while being unfit through drink or drugs, having no licence and no insurance." He has been bailed until September.

Firefighter David Wood, watch manager at Royston station, arrived at the scene shortly after police officers and paramedics at around 9.10pm.

He said: "We didn't have to cut him out because by the time we got there he was out of the car and was being treated by ambulance staff."
