Musicians support worthy cause

A HOST of Sheffield rock bands will be showing themselves in a new light on stage, when they swap thrashing guitars and pounding drums for catchy pop choruses in a charity gig.

The artists will be leaving their street-cred at the doorway of West Street Live as they embark on a night of cheesy pop featuring everything from Cliff Richard to Britney Spears - and anything else in between. All money raised will be split between Sheffield Mencap and the work of Sheffield Red Tape music studios with adults with learning disabilities.

Acts taking part include Jambalaya, Star Bug, Lunacy Act, Stonerun, The Get Down Nights, Rolfcopterz, Two Sad Old Men, and Reverend Jon McClure's younger brother Chris.

Each band or artist will pick tracks from a hat to perform on stage.

The show is the brainchild of Garth Hope, from Mencap, and Jim Cutt, who works for Red Tape promoting music to people with learning disabilities.

Tom Pick, who works with Citizenship First - a not-for-profit organisation which supports adults with learning difficulties - is also helping to organise the event.

He said: "It's guaranteed to be a fun night, offering people the chance to see a lot of local bands in a totally new light for just the 5 entry fee.

"It's certainly going to be different."

Tickets for the event, on Sunday December 6, are available on the door, or by emailing poptasticsheffield@googlemail.com or calling Tom on 07786 686800. The music begins at 5pm.
