Musical con man warning

POLICE in Derbyshire have turned to the stage to spread the message about doorstep crime and distraction burglaries.

They have asked a theatre company to base a musical around the issue to warn elderly and vulnerable residents that they could be targeted by people trying to con their way into their homes to steal from them.

The production – Trickster the Musical – will be performed in Dronfield and Killamarsh.

After each performance, members of the local police Safer Neighbourhood Teams will be available to talk to members of the audience.

Members of Derbyshire Fire Service and Trading Standards will also be there, along with Severn Trent Water staff, who will detail their password protection scheme.

The company encourages residents to set up an agreed password which must be given by its members of staff before they are allowed into homes.

Burglary reduction advice packs will also be handed out.

Sgt Mel Hagues, of the North East Derbyshire Community Safety Partnership, which funded and organised the initiative, said: "We hope by seeing 'Trickster' people will have the awareness and confidence to turn away bogus callers and report them to the police.

The musical will be performed on Thursday February 25, in Killamarsh Leisure Centre, at 9.30am, and in Dronfield Sports Centre at 2.30pm the same day.
