Murder probe arrest

THIS is the first photograph of a woman found dead in her Sheffield home.

A murder investigation was launched following the discovery of Jane Green's body in her Sheffield home.

The 44-year-old was found by police in her flat on Woodfarm Drive, Stannington, just after midnight yesterday.

South Yorkshire Police said a 54-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder.

He was taken to a city police station for questioning and was still being held today.

Detectives suspect her death was the result of a domestic disturbance.

Jane's family said today: "We are extremely distressed at the death of Jane and would appreciate our privacy to be respected at this time."

A post mortem examination was carried out yesterday afternoon but police have not yet revealed how she died.

Jane was found in a bedroom of her second floor flat after a 999 call was made from the property by her partner, named by neighbours as Bob.

Residents said they saw a man being led away from the property shortly after police arrived.

The flat was under police guard yesterday as detectives carried out house-to-house enquiries in the block asking if neighbours had seen or heard anything suspicious leading up to the death.

A 20-year-old mum-of-one who lives nearby has revealed she heard frantic knocking on her door between 10.30pm and 11.30pm - shortly before emergency services were called to the flat.

"I heard somebody banging on my door but because it was late and I have a baby I didn't want to answer - I don't know who it was, it might have been Jane, her partner or something unrelated - I don't know, but it has left me thinking," she said.

"I am really shocked by this, I really liked Jane. She had lived there for years on her own and then a few months ago her boyfriend moved in with her.

"Jane would do anything for you, a really kind neighbour who would go out of her way to help.

"She was really outgoing and good fun, I can't believe she is dead."

Another neighbour on the landing described the area as "the Bronx" and said the death had left him desperate to move.

"It is like the Bronx here, I don't want to live here and this death makes me want to move out even more," he said.

Others on the landing said they had not heard anything and the first they knew of the incident was when they woke up to find police tape cordoning off the flat.

One of Jane's relatives, from the Malin Bridge Inn, said the family did not want to talk about the tragedy.

Anyone with information about the circumstances surrounding the death should call detectives at Ecclesfield police station on 0114 296 3959.
