A SHEFFIELD MP has called on the Government to help make it easier for people on benefits to serve in the Territorial Army.
Meg Munn, who represents Heeley, spoke during a debate on defence in the House of Commons, raising concerns about recruitment from her local Territorial Army base at Manor Top.
She told Defence Secretary Liam Fox: “The Territorial Army regiment based in my constituency tells me it struggles to recruit people, particularly those who are unemployed, because of the impact that the time spent with the TA, as well as the wages, have on benefits.
“Will the Secretary of State look at this issue with the Department for Work and Pensions to ensure those who are unemployed and want to serve can do so?”
Dr Fox replied: “The honourable lady makes a very interesting point. I certainly will undertake to do that because I want to diminish barriers to serving in the territorials.”
