A team of South Yorkshire mums have pulled on their running shoes, as part of a new womens fitness campaign.
16 mums from Thurcroft in Rotherham have come together to launch ‘Mums’ Team,’ an activities group which sees mums and their children take part in walks in their local community.
The team was created by South Yorkshire Sport and West Yorkshire Sport as part of a campaign to encourage women to lead sports and fitness activities in their communities.
As well as 16 mums and 22 children, three members of staff from Aughton Early Years and Thurcroft Children’s Centre also took part in the team’s first six-mile walk this month, which was arranged by Mums’ Team mentor Julia Knight.
Julia, who was the first to sign up to become a Mums’ Team mentor, organised the buggly walk with the aim of encouraging participants to, in turn, become a leader in their community and arrange similar sessions.
Julia said: “Leading one of the first Mums’ Team sessions was fantastic. The Mums’ Team project is about, encouraging mums to exercise more regularly, but it’s also about leadership as well as participation. We want more mums to get involved with sessions and be inspired to lead their own.”
Helen Marney, operations director for South Yorkshire Sport, said: “Our mentors and their newly-recruited leaders will be organising more sessions for their family, friends and colleagues across Yorkshire. It’s a region-wide project, and we’re hoping that this successful first session will set the tone for the rest of the campaign.”
