Mum left shocked by adult sex messages on sweets

A YOUNG mum was left shocked after finding steamy adult sex messages on sweets she had bought for her little children.

Melanie Fletcher, aged 25, was stunned when her six-year-old son Joshua asked, "Mummy, what does it say on my sweets?" and she noticed the graphic slogans printed on them.

The adult phrases – too explicit to be published in a family newspaper – were on sweets in a 'Bingo Variety Pack' Melanie bought from the 99p Store on Angel Street in the city centre.

A label on the bag – which contained little packets with mixtures of jelly babies, candies, and boiled sweets – said the toffees were suitable for children aged three and over.

Today Melanie, of Manor, Sheffield, told The Star: "I thought I was seeing things. There was no indication anything like that would be inside and the packet said it was suitable for children.

"I had just picked them up from the confectionary aisle, where they were among all the other packs of sweets. There was no warning."

Melanie had just handed one of the bags to eldest son Joshua when he opened it and asked her to read out what was written on the sweets inside.

Stunned Melanie, a full-time mum-of-three, was about to reply when she stopped herself.

"I was so shocked," said Melanie, who lives with partner Matthew Wilson, a warehouseman, and her two younger children Elisia, four, and Leighton, three.

"What if I had bought the sweets for one of my children's birthday parties and put them in a lucky bag?"

The Star visited the 99p Store and found several packs of the 'Bingo' sweets still on sale. Some contained the same toffees Melanie had discovered, branded with saucy slogans.

Hussein Lalani, 99p Stores' commercial director, said the adult sweets must have been included in children's packs due to a "mix-up" by the supplier.

He said the remaining 'Bingo' packets would be moved to another part of the store, where more adult items are on sale.
