Mr Loophole helps clear Tory MEP
A Tory MEP has avoided a driving ban after he was found not guilty of a speeding offence in Sheffield following an intervention from the lawyer known as "Mr Loophole".
Timothy Kirkhope, 62, is a former Westminster MP and was due to stand trial at Sheffield Magistrates' Court after he denied driving at 35mph in a 30mph limit on Burngreave Road on February 2.
But at a hearing the prosecution said it was offering no evidence and the North Yorkshire MEP's lawyer, Nick Freeman, successfully asked a district judge to find him not guilty.
It is understood Mr Kirkhope, who lives in Scotton, Knaresborough, already had nine points on his licence and, if convicted of speeding, he could well have been banned from driving for six months.
Speaking after the brief hearing, Mr Freeman said the prosecution made mistakes in serving evidence regarding technical issues with the speed camera in question which meant the evidence was invalid.
Mr Freeman said: "Mr Kirkhope is extremely relieved that this ordeal is behind him."
