Barnsley MP Michael Dugher is encouraging people to support the local markets in Barnsley.
At the start of ‘Love Your Local Market’ fortnight, running from May 15 to 29, Mr Dugher, who represents Barnsley East, said he is a regular user of markets and wants to see them continue in the future.
He said with wages being squeezed consumer spending remains sluggish, making life difficult for markets and smaller shops on the high street.
The MP added: “I would encourage people to support their local markets and high streets. As a regular visitor to Hoyland and Wombwell markets I understand how important they are to support and what a shame it would be to see them disappearing from our streets.
“One of the things I hear from constituents is how the character of the local high street is changing.
“Part of making sure that we keep a vibrant local market and high street is to have the support of the local community, but there is also a lot that the Government could do to help struggling retailers.
“Consumer confidence has been badly hit by the Government’s VAT hike and the squeeze on family incomes. The Government should enact a temporary VAT cut and give local people a real say over the future of their high street.”
