Residents sat down with a South Yorkshire MP to discuss how politicians can re-engage with the public.
Dan Jarvis, Barnsley Central Labour MP, said the event was particularly aimed at those who do not generally vote in elections.
The debate took place yesterday evening at Barnsley Town Hall.
Mr Jarvis said: “The event was a chance to find out why some people are disillusioned with the political system and choose not to exercise their democratic right to vote.”
Voter turnout was just 35 per cent at the by-election where Mr Jarvis won his seat.
