SOUTH Yorkshire’s newest Labour MP has given his first speech to the party’s conference - attacking the Government’s record on defence.
Former soldier Dan Jarvis, a major in the Parachute Regiment who now represents Barnsley Central, said: “When I joined the Army, the Tories portrayed themselves as the party of the Forces, propagating the belief they knew best – that somehow they owned defence. But it was a myth, it simply wasn’t true.
“Conference, we need to dispel that myth – the Tories do not own defence. In fact their vision on defence is wrong for Britain and wrong for Britain’s role in the world.”
Mr Jarvis attacked the Government’s plans to slow progress on making the Military Covenant law, ensuring soldiers and their families are rewarded for their sacrifices.
