MP calls for Ministerial pay deal to be slashed

AN MP has launched a campaign in Parliament to slash the pay of all Government ministers to a maximum of £82,000.
John Mann, who represents Bassetlaw in north Notinghamshire, has proposed a Parliamentary Standards Bill to the Commons which would limit the salaries of ministers to no more than 25 per cent more than a back bench MP’s wage of £65,738 - meaning a pay cut of around £60,000 for Prime Minister David Cameron.
Mr Mann’s bill will not be debated before the expected end of the Parliamentary session in the spring, but the Bassetlaw MP pledged to reintroduce the plan to the Commons if needed.
All ministers, including Mr Cameron, took a five per cent pay cut following the last general election and accepted a pay freeze for the five-year Parliament.
But Mr Mann said ministers should lose more.
“In these austere times, people’s standard of living is being cut and ministers need to take a lead,” he said.
“There is no reason why ministers should be getting the vast amounts they are paid. The five per cent cut was a token gesture - ministers’ pay is on top of parliamentary salary.”
His other proposals are cutting the House of Lords to 300 unpaid peers, adding council tax bands for houses worth more than £500,000, £1 million and £1.5 million, along with banning higher rate taxpayers in the public sector from receiving bonuses.
