Campaigners fighting to keep a library open have called on their local MP for support.
Members of Stannington District Library Group - known as Stand - asked Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg for help to survive as a community-run facility.
They are asking for assurances that professional librarians will still be available to support volunteers and users once Sheffield Council relinquishes control.
Stannington is one of 10 under-threat libraries in the city which could become ‘associate libraries’ as part of money-saving measures.
Mr Clegg, MP for Sheffield Hallam, agreed to use what influence he had to further the group’s cause at a specially-organised meeting.
Jenny van Tinteren, chairwoman of Stand, said: “He seems to appreciate the work we have already done, and to be aware of the challenge that lies ahead of us.
“He agreed to help for example by asking the council to support innovative ideas to retain professional librarian posts where possible.”
Stand is set to host a public meeting to update local residents on the library campaign’s progress at Lomas Hall, Church Street, on Tuesday, March 18, from 7pm.
All are welcome.
