ACTIVE South Yorkshire types are being urged to get out and about on their mountain bikes this weekend in an event organised by the Barnsley Explorer Scouts. The Dark Peak Gates Mountain Bike Challenge takes place on Saturday May 14 and is open to everyone aged 14 or over.

The 35-mile, mainly off-road route takes in the Dark Peak scenery and will be over some rugged and challenging terrain.

The fully marshalled ride leaves Flouch car park, near the A616, at 9am and entry will cost £10.

The proceeds will be used to help take young people to next year’s Olympic Games in London.

Gavin Wood of Bike Club Sheffield, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for people to get out on their bikes and sample some of the best mountain biking in the country.”
