THIRTY-three motorists parked in Rotherham Council car parks without buying a ticket on the first Saturday after free parking was axed.
Council bosses have vowed to clamp down on drivers who do not pay for parking in town centre after last year’s free Saturday parking ended.
The scheme ended at the start of 2011 – but 33 motorists parked without a ticket on Saturday January 8.
The council agreed to issue warning notices rather than penalty charges – but will not be lenient in the future.
Cabinet member for town centres, Coun Richard Russell said: “Unfortunately, funding to continue the scheme is just not available, especially as other essential services must continue under an already-reduced budget.
“We decided to give an amnesty to motorists but unfortunately we simply cannot continue to do that.”
