Motorists are being warned to expect more delays on the M1 in South Yorkshire as the next stage of the smart motorway project between Rotherham and Stocksbridge gets underway this week.
New narrow lanes with a 50mph speed limit will be installed in the next stage of the £112 million scheme.
As part of the project, the hard shoulder will be eventually be permanently converted into an extra lane between junction 32 at Rotherham and junction 35a at Stocksbridge to ease congestion and variable speed limits will be used.
Highways England’s senior project manager, Andy Kirk, said: “Work on the scheme is progressing well and we are now in a position to start the work between junctions 32 and 34.
“When complete, road users will benefit from reduced congestion.”
