AN ELDERLY motorist whose car got stuck on tram tracks in Sheffield - blocking the route, and causing delays for commuters - was taken to hospital for a check-up after police arranged for his vehicle to be moved.

The man drove his Peugeot onto the tram tracks at Hanover Way between the Sheffield University and Shalesmoor stops, just after 6pm on Monday,

A number of trams backed up and had to stop running on the route heading out of Sheffield city centre until arrangements could be made for the man’s vehicle to be towed away.

A police spokeswoman said officers were at the scene for around 30 minutes.

“A Peugeot car, driven by an elderly man, became stuck when he accidentally drove his car onto the tram tracks at Hanover Way,” she confirmed.

“Police attended to assist with traffic control and to help with the recovery of the vehicle from the tram tracks.

“The elderly man was taken to hospital, where he was checked over by medical staff.”
