Muslim leaders laid a wreath and students held a colourful demonstration as part of events in Sheffield in the wake of the murder of Drummer Lee Rigby.

The gesture by Sheffield Federation of Mosques at the memorial in Barker’s Pool also involved speeches and prayers for the terror attack victim.

Muhammad Ali, of the federation’s executive council, said: “Mosque leaders have shown clear leadership in condemning the attack publicly and within the mosques, and have also led prayers for the family of the solider.”

Sheffield University Students’ Union held a Don’t Let Hate Divide Us demonstration outside its building on Western Bank. Union president Abdi Suleiman said: “This is a reaction to the murder, and to the English Defence League’s attempts to whip up Islamophobia.”

EDL members are planning to visit Sheffield today to lay a wreath at the war memorial.
