More talks on fire dispute
TALKS between South Yorkshire Fire Service managers and the Fire Brigades Union continued late into the night yesterday in a bid to resolve a long-running dispute over shift times.
Both sides met with an independent conciliation panel to try to reach agreement on what hours firefighters should be working.
Bosses want them to work four 12-hour shifts in a row instead of the system currently worked - two 15-hour nights followed by two nine-hour days.
They claim it will give firefighters more time for community safety work and training.
But firefighters object to the move, and a plan to sack them if they do not sign new contracts.
They have staged a number of walk-outs over the proposal.
