More cash to fight flooding

SHEFFIELD is to get £175,000 in new funding for flood defences, as one of 77 'high risk' areas in the country to receive government cash.

In June 2007 the city was one of the worst-hit areas. The River Don burst its banks when a sixth of our average annual rain fell in 12 hours.

Brightside MP David Blunkett said: "This extra money is very welcome in terms of continuing work on protecting against the terrible impact of severe flooding that we saw so graphically in the summer of 2007.

"We were reminded of the seriousness of this issue a couple of months ago with further flooding in the city centre and beyond."
