Musicians flocked to a North Derbyshire brass band festival to show off their talents and raise money for charity.

Hundreds of people attended North East Derbyshire District Council’s 55th annual brass band festival, which was held in Dronfield.

The Shirebrook Miners’ Welfare Band was named the winner, ahead of the Ireland Colliery Band and Matlock Band, with Matlock member Chris Garfitt crowned best soloist.

Coun Ken Savidge, council chairman, said: “I’m proud to lead this event as chairman for the second year in a row and, once again, the festival was a thoroughly enjoyable community event with some great musical talent on show. Can I express my thanks to everyone who came along and helped raise funds for what is a very worthy cause close to my heart.”

The event raised more than £420 for the chairman’s appeal, which this year is in aid of Sheffield Children’s Hospital.
