Miners helped to breathe more easily
VISITORS from China and Mongolia have been welcomed to Rotherham's specialist BreathingSpace respiratory centre to see how it is helping hundreds of ex-miners with serious lung conditions.
MP John Prescott, who opened the 11 million centre two years ago, came back to show the visitors the facilities which were funded from a partnership between The Coalfields Regeneration Trust, NHS Rotherham and Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council.
In Rotherham one in six deaths is from respiratory disease, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic asthma, bronchitis and emphysema.
More than 1,500 people in Rotherham have received treatment at the centre.
The centre is now attracting attention from around the world for the quality of its work in helping to slow down the progress of lung diseases and improve patients' quality of life.
Mr Prescott said: "I hope that the delegation I have brought with me from China will be able to benefit from the pioneering expertise and technology that has been developed here and use it as an inspiration for similar services back in their own city of Chongqing which, like Rotherham, has a long history of coal mining and heavy industry."
Dr John Radford, Director of Public Health for NHS Rotherham, said: "This visit enables us to share our experience and learning with China and Mongolia where the mining industry has a very significant health impact."
