Council bosses in Chesterfield are to invest £69 million improving the condition of council houses in Chesterfield.

The cash will be spent on installing cavity wall insulation and replacing older central heating systems in homes.

Roofs and old uPVC windows will be replaced and improvements will be made to the outside spaces in some communities, including the London Boroughs estate in Barrow Hill and the Holmehall estate.

Councillor Jim McManus, Chesterfield Borough Council’s executive member for housing, said: “It is a real achievement to have got our council homes to the Government’s Decent Homes Standard. But we don’t want to stop there because we believe council homes are not second class. They should be every bit as good as the private sector can offer.”
