Milestone for castle revamp

Rotherham Boston Castle

Rotherham Boston Castle

UNUSUAL celebrations took place to mark a milestone stage in £900,000 renovations at a historic South Yorkshire building.

Dignitaries gathered on the roof of Boston Castle, Rotherham, which has been repaired as part of a three-year scheme.

Mayor of Rotherham, Shaun Wright, attended the event at the Grade II listed building, where a time capsule was also cemented into one of the mock battlements.

The renovation, by contractors William Anelay ltd, has been going since 2009 to transform it from a semi-derelict site into a visitor’s centre and community facility.

The internal renovation, which includes exhibition areas, an education room and a roof level viewing platform, can now progress for completion in Spring 2012.

Andy Briggs, technical director of consultants WYG, said: “It is great to start seeing the plans come to life. The ceremony really does mark the renovation moving forward and highlights the hard work that has already taken place.

“The castle is a little gem, and if you’ve got any interest in the Sheffield area, then you should get up there.”

He said that one of the most challenging elements of the renovation was restoring it as closely as possible to its original condition.

Coun Amy Rushworth said: “It will be splendid to see its regeneration as it will be hugely valuable in terms of education activities.”

Funding for the project has come from Rotherham Council, the National Lottery and the Biffaward environmental grants scheme.
