A NEW bridge uniting two communities in a school project has been officially opened.

It crosses the River Dore to link Wombwell and Darfield as part of the entrance to a £55 million new advanced learning centre that will replace Darfield Foulstone School of Creative Arts and Wombwell High School in 2012.

Coun Karen Dyson, Barnsley Mayor, cut the ribbon to unveil the bridge.

The advanced learning centre is one of 11 schools being developed as part of the Building Schools for the Future initiative.

It will offer top facilities for more than 1,700 students with additional resources for adult learning opportunities and the community. Each school year group will have their own designated areas.

Coun Linda Burgess, Barnsley Council cabinet member for children, young people and families, said: “This marks an important stage of the construction of this advanced learning centre.”
