Mermaids and diver protest against climate change

ENVIRONMENTAL campaigners dressed as a deep sea diver and mermaids when they met a Sheffield MP to ask for stronger laws to tackle climate change.

The Friends of the Earth members spoke to Attercliffe MP Clive Betts outside Sheffield Town Hall. They wore the costumes to highlight links between global warming and flooding.

A Climate Change Bill has been passed by Parliament, which sets out requirements to cut emissions of greenhouse gases, and MPs are being asked to vote on what exactly the new law will say.

Green groups are calling on Mr Betts and fellow MPs to adopt strict legal limits.

One of the mermaids, Michelle Hawthorne, said: "The challenge is to make sure the law really does the job.

"The latest research shows we need to cut emissions by 90 per cent by 2050 to avoid dangerous climate change which would affect us all.

"And we need annual targets, so we can keep track of how we're doing."

Fellow mermaid Sarah Hards added: "We also need to make sure aviation is included in the bill – it makes a massive contribution to climate change."
