A EURO MP who called a meeting in Sheffield to discuss reopening the city’s airport says the facility is a ‘valuable asset’ which should be ‘returned to operational status as soon as possible’.
Timothy Kirkhope, Tory MEP for Yorkshire and The Humber, organised a public debate at the Aston Hotel, Catcliffe, about whether the airport should be reopened.
He said: “I have been concerned to see a successful airport in Sheffield for many years and supported the large sums of EU money which were allocated for infrastructure works in the vicinity.
“I want to see it returned to operational status.
“In the last 10 years the whole aviation scene in Europe has shifted. Airports like this – with feeder routes into large hubs like Amsterdam, London, Paris and Brussels – are becoming much more popular.”
