Controversial plans for a residential mental health unit in Sheffield are set to be approved – despite hundreds of objections.
Some 38 people have submitted letters of objection and 379 residents have signed a petition against the plans for a site in Beighton.
However, Sheffield Council planning officers have recommended councillors approve the proposals for land occupied by old garages off Sevenairs Road, when they meet on Tuesday.
Guinness Northern Counties housing association has applied for permission for the site behind Daisy Walk, and adjoining Lilac Road.
The company’s application proposes demolition of garages and construction of a residential and supported housing development.
The building would be two-and-a-half storeys high and provide 20 one-bed supported flats, with ancillary accommodation and car parking.
The petition calls for a ‘full impact study’ of the proposed development ‘in relation to safety, parking and privacy, as well as a full risk assessment in relation to future occupants’.
A total of 38 objections have been made to the development by surrounding residents.
They argue the development would result in ‘overlooking and loss of privacy’, and upstairs windows would ‘look directly into neighbouring properties’.
Further objections centred on lack of street parking – while others were unhappy about a 15-space car park planned on-site, which they feared could create noise and attract nuisance.
However, the report by planning officials, recommending approval, says: “The development will provide independent living for people with mental health issues.
“It is not a secure unit but once up and running there will always be a member of staff on site.
“Residents will receive support aimed at helping them live in their own homes. The applicant has confirmed none of the people who will live in the new apartments will be a threat to public safety.”
The report says: “The proposal is an acceptable use in a designated housing area.
“Following amendments, it is felt occupiers of neighbouring properties should not suffer any significant loss of amenity and the level of parking provision is sufficient.”
