NORMALLY you’d stop it and buy one to cool off.

But when this ice cream van came down the street the best thing to do was steer well clear.

The van was being driven down Andover Street, Pitsmoor, at around 6pm on Wednesday when it dramatically burst into flames.

Star reader Laurence Alexander was there to capture the action on his mobile phone.

You can see his footage on the Star’s website.

Laurence, aged 26, from Nether Edge, who works as a data analyst with Cadbury’s, said: “I was on my way to the New Roots cafe when I noticed a crowd of youngsters.

“I couldn’t tell what was on fire at first. Then I realised it was an ice cream van.

“There were other ice cream vans there too – I don’t know why. Perhaps they came to the assistance of the driver.”

Fire crews from Central Station quickly dealt with the blaze which they say was accidental.

A spokesman for the Fire Service said: “The driver, a lady, was making her way down Andover Street when she noticed smoke coming from the engine compartment. She pulled over and got out safely before the fire took hold.”
