Megan's soup-er recipe for success wows judges
A TASTE of the East has won Sheffield student Megan Harrod a chance to see her homemade soup on supermarket shelves.
Megan, a student at Sheffield College, won the regional heat of the New Covent Garden Food Co's annual Student Chef National Final.
Her recipe for Far East Chilli and Coconut Soup wowed judges who staged the regional heat at the Granville Road college.
Students were invited to create and present their own soup recipe to judges from the New Covent Garden Food Co and to explain the inspiration behind their use of ingredients.
They also had to talk about the commercial qualities of their creations.
Georgina Brown, from the Covent Garden Soup Co, said: "We thoroughly enjoyed our day at Sheffield College and it was a tough decision to make but Megan Harrod produced an excellent Far East Chilli and Coconut soup, which we felt was a well-thought-out, creative concept and it tasted absolutely delicious.
"It's great to see the students getting involved with the project, using fresh ingredients and considering the business elements of the project as well. We wish Megan Harrod the best of luck for the final."
The competition involves students from a number of catering colleges round the country. The student crowned Student Chef 2006 in the national final at the end of June will see their soup on supermarket shelves in November as one of New Covent Garden Food Co's regular Soups of the Month.
The successful student will also star in the New Covent Garden Food Co's press advertising campaign for their soup and win 1,000 for themselves and 1,000 for their college. Two runners-up will each receive 500.
