AN EVENT is taking place in South Yorkshire as part of a major UK-wide exercise to test the country’s readiness for flooding.
The Environment Agency is holding Exercise Watermark between March 4 and 11, bringing together government bodies, businesses and communities to test responses to severe flooding from rivers, the sea, reservoirs, groundwater and surface water.
An event is taking place in Darton, Barnsley, where the flood action group, Environment Agency and Barnsley Council will test local flood plans.
Environment Agency incident and emergencies planning manager Phil Chappell said: “Flooding can have devastating effects on people, businesses and communities and climate change means the likelihood of more extreme weather which can lead to flooding will increase so it’s essential we plan ahead and are prepared for flood risk.”
