Medical workers should speak English

Have your say

Well thank goodness, an outbreak of common sense has emerged in the form of a draft bill to ban medical workers who cannot speak English.

I don’t mind which country a medic treating me or my family comes from but I do mind if they cannot understand my language or make themselves understood.

We are all human and can make mistakes but the risk must be minimised and this move by the Law Commission seeks to do just that. The proposal gives health regulators power to sack foreign workers with a poor grasp of English.

Because of the EU freedom of movement legislation doctors, nurses and other health workers can work here without any formal NHS training and in my book that plainly creates an unacceptable risk and so I welcome the draft bill and hope it is soon enshrined in law.
