Medal sold in tense auction

AN FA Cup winners’ medal awarded to Mexborough-born former Barnsley star Eric Brook in 1934 sold for £9,120 at an auction in Chester.

The hammer came down at £2,000 more than expected – the 14-carat gold piece had been expected to sell for between £5,000 and £7,000 at Bonhams.

But an 1896 FA Cup winners’ medal won by Sheffield Wednesday’s Robert Petrie was dramatically withdrawn from the auction shortly before sale because of an ownership dispute. The medal had been predicted to sell for up to £7,000.
