South Yorkshire youngsters have been inspired to follow in the footsteps of the region’s Olympic heroes, according to the head of Sheffield International Venues.
The company, which owns Don Valley Stadium and the English Institute of Sport, has launched its ‘Search for a Sporting Star’ campaign in a bid to find our champions of the future.
The competition invites youngsters aged between five and 16 to submit a two-minute video of them playing their favourite sport.
Judges will then select the best from 12 different sports, including athletics, diving, and judo, with winners awarded a year’s free coaching at Sheffield’s top facilities. There will also be runner-up prizes of six weeks’ coaching.
Steven Bailey, chief executive, said: “We are already seeing a surge in young people wanting to follow in the footsteps of their sporting favourites.
“The huge success of Team GB at the London Olympics, in particular athletes from across Yorkshire like Sheffield’s own Jessica Ennis, is proving to be a huge inspiration for young people.”
The closing date for entries is September 9.
