They might never want to see a burger again, but staff at a Sheffield pub look set to have broken a world record for the longest barbecue marathon by a team.

Hundreds of people turned out to the Three Merry Lads in Lodge Moor at the weekend as staff attempted to grill for more than 29 hours, one minute, to break the record previously held by two men at a pub in London last year.

They kept the fires burning for 30 hours - cooking 3,000 items of food in total, from burgers to sausages and chicken to kebabs - despite spells of rain.

Barry Croxhall, owner, led the challenge with head chef David Sheldon in an attempt to beat the record.

Barry said: “The support we had was just fantastic.

“There were hundreds of people there over the weekend, on the Sunday afternoon it was great, there must have been 200 or 300 people there.

“There was only a short spell of rain for about ten minutes then the sun came back out, but we wouldn’t have let that put us off.

“The barbecue was brilliant but I’m not sure whether I’d want to do it again, in total I was awake for about 41 hours which wasn’t a nice experience.

“The rules are very strict so the people who started the barbecue had to finish it and we were only able to have a five minute break every hour.”

The challenge started at the pub, on Redmire Road, at 8am on Saturday morning and was completed on Sunday afternoon.

Video evidence will now be sent to the Guinness World Book of Records to ratify the result and confirmation is expected next week.

Barry added: “Hopefully we will have brought the record up north.”

The longest non-team barbecue marathon was 80 hours long, and achieved by Jan Greef in Colombus, Georgia, USA.
