Mayor on hand for opening of new toilet block

RESIDENTS in a north Sheffield suburb can now spend a penny in comfort – after their public loos were refurbished.

The new bogs are even posh enough for the city's first citizen.

Giving his seal of approval, Lord Mayor Coun Graham Oxley took a tour of the block on Cowley Lane, Chapeltown – but his civic duties didn't extend to testing the facilities.

The stone building has been kitted out with the top-of-the range lavatories.

The side entrances have been blocked up and two new front entry doors lead to a modern disabled toilet and a unisex toilet.

New facilities include baby changing, sharps disposal, no-touch flush system, emergency lighting and automatic hand washing facilities.

The door to the unisex toilet will be automatically locked at dusk and opened for use at dawn, seven days a week.

But the disabled toilet will be accessed using the RADAR National Key Scheme and will be accessible 24 hours a day.

An emergency light and sounder will also be fitted.

The toilets are built in the same style as nearby Newton Hall and the stone fits in with other domestic properties nearby. When carrying out the renovations the council's Street Force team maintained the shell of the building and modernised the facilities inside.

New floors, walls and ceilings have been built, stonework cleaned and the tiled roof repaired.

Replacement signs and external lighting have been fitted, as well as lights to show engaged and vacant use.
