Mayor's parade back to former glory - SLIDESHOW

IT USED to be a simple parade - but now it's an all day affair.

In recent years Sheffield's Lord Mayor's Parade lost some of its sparkle.

The event became a shadow of its former self when parades of old attracted thousands of spectators each year.

Sadly the floats all but disappeared and so did the crowds.

But organisers this year attempted to revive the event by extending the parade to an exciting day of free entertainment for the family to bring the curtain down on this year's Children's Festival.

And it worked.

A large and enthusiastic parade with 20 schools, community groups and businesses took part.

They set off at a brisk pace from the Peace Gardens at noon.

Following behind some of the city's finest marching bands kids walked in colourful costumes while floats carried large structures depicting key events and landmarks from the city's history.

The parade - which had the theme of The Changing Face of Sheffield - saw Roundheads walk with Cavaliers and American cheerleaders march in tandem with children in Tudor dress.

Their destination was Devonshire Green where members of the Sealed Knot re-enacted a bloody battle from the English Civil War.

Cheerleading and American football demonstrations, live music, street theatre, crafts and a climbing wall added to the fun day out.

Arts and festival manager Richard Johnson said: "The event has been opened up to have a much wider reach.

"Much more has been invested to make the event a full day, rather than a short parade.

"This year's afternoon of fun on Devonshire Green builds on the success last year's event, when we had extra activities at the end of parade in Tudor Square."
