DISABLED Doncaster College student Matthew Whitehead has struck gold!

The 19-year-old life skills student, from Balby, has won a string of gold medals in athletics, and now has run for the Mencap Great Britain Athletics team in a four nations championship held in Reims, France.

Matthew spent a few days training there before competing against other athletes from France, Holland and Germany.

He said: “I was very honoured by being chosen to go to France to represent Great Brittan, but also a little bit nervous - especially as I wasn’t really sure what was expected of me. But everybody in the other teams was friendly and supportive of each other.

“The whole experience was just amazing.”

Matthew runs for Doncaster Athletic Club in the disability section, and has competed in a variety of events across the country.

He has won 12 gold, nine silver and 15 bronze medals, all for the 100 and 200 metres and after all that success Matthew has now moved up to middle distance running.
