HUNDREDS of homes were evacuated in Doncaster over the weekend after gas cylinders started to explode when a shed went up in flames.
Around 500 residents were ordered out of their homes in and around Brunswick Square, Stainforth, on Friday night when firefighters realised that there were cylinders inside the burning shed.
They put a 200 metre circular cordon in place around the blaze and asked everyone living inside it to leave.
Locals were offered emergency refuge in a nearby youth club and school.
They were allowed back home before daylight on Saturday but firefighters remained at the scene most of the day with water jets on all the cylinders to cool them down in a bid to prevent any further explosions.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is under way.
