Martial arts expert gains title

A MARTIAL arts teacher in Sheffield has risen up the ranks to become one of the senior tutors in his field.

Peter Allsop, who teaches kung fu at the Fitness Club, on Surrey Street, has gained the title of Sifu in the art of Qigong, a Chinese meditative practice, and can also now run a programme in health, youth and longevity.

Peter has studied Shaolin kung fu for 38 years and

has taught as a master in the art for nearly three decades after training intensively in China.

He had to endure a six hour practical test plus a written examination in London to be awarded the title of Sifu.

Peter said he was "very proud" to gain his awards.

"It was very demanding to obtain them," he said. "Qigong is fundamental to Chinese martial arts, it gives students extra strength, endurance and willpower to undergo prolonged and rigorous training."

Peter has taught classes

in Sheffield and Chesterfield since 1993 as a founding member of the Shaolin

Fists International organisation.

The grandmaster of the organisation, Yap Leong, selected Peter to become technical advisor to Shaolin Fists, and he was also appointed chief instructor for Yorkshire and Derbyshire.

Peter's classes take place on every Wednesday and Thursday from 7.30pm to 9.30pm, and on Saturdays from 3pm to 5pm.
