TRUANCY patrols are being carried to identify youngsters who congregate around Castle Market in Sheffield city centre.

Police are staging the patrols in a bid to reduce anti-social behaviour in the area.

Officers have had reports of groups of youths congregating on Waingate and at the entrance to the markets, intimidating traders and shoppers.

A police spokesman said their behaviour was “resulting in people avoiding the area all together”.

He said truancy patrols were aimed at finding children regularly off school.

“The aim is to find out the reasons why the children are not attending school and to work alongside them and their families to encourage and facilitate their reintroduction to education,” he added.
