March to remember gun crime victims

COMMUNITY march through a Sheffield suburb blighted by shootings will stop at scenes of three tragedies to remember the victims of gun crime.

The Burngreave Bouncing Back campaign aims to unite the community and engage young people to make the right decisions rather than turning to a life of crime.

The march next Saturday, March 15, will visit the scenes of three Burngreave shootings.

It will begin at 1pm at the gates of the park in Osgathorpe Road - just yards from where 20-year-old Ibrahim Ilyas was gunned down in June 2006.

The march will then proceed to the cemetery gates on Scott Road, where taxi driver Younis Khan, 53, died in March last year.

The last stop before the group makes its way into the city centre will be at Nottingham Cliff park in Nottingham Street - where 16-year-old Jonathan Matondo was killed last October.

The march will then make its way into the city centre, ending up at the Town Hall where local councillors Jackie Drayton and Ibrar Hussain will address the group.

Andrew Rashford-Hewitt, pastor of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Andover Street, organised the event in association with Burngreave Churches Together and other community groups.

He urged all local residents to show their support for the initiative by turning out on the day.

Pastor Rashford-Hewitt said: "The march itself is to try to engage young people to make better choices - to say no to those negative influences of crime and to say yes to the better choices of training, education and employment.

"It's also about celebrating the positives within Burn-greave, showing a sense of community, and spreading hope.

"We are also hoping to recruit men who are willing to offer some of their time to become mentors to younger men living in the area."

The march will be at Osgathorpe Road at 1pm, Scott Road at 1.30pm, Nottingham Street at 2.15pm, and the Town Hall by 3.30pm.
