Mantel fans brought to book
BOOKWORMS in Sheffield enjoyed a reading from a Booker Prize-winning author last night.
Hilary Mantel won the prize for her historical novel Wolf Hall, and read extracts from the work to fans at the Showroom cinema.
Hilary, who hails from Hadfield, Derbyshire, appeared as part of Sheffield's Off The Shelf literary festival.
Big names such as Vic Reeves, Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall, Joan Bakewell, the Hairy Bikers and Michael Mansfield QC have visited Sheffield throughout the festival to talk about their books, along with many workshops and exhibitions.
Hilary's book explores the court of Henry VIII in the 1520s, and focuses on the character of Thomas Cromwell, the king's chief minister and advisor.
The author, who graduated from Sheffield University in law in 1973, is also visiting Sheffield Hallam University today to give a workshop to students, as well as a masterclass on her winning novel.
Hilary has been associated with Hallam's MA Writing course for the past six years.
Coun Sylvia Dunkley, Sheffield Council's Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Tourism, said: "I'm really proud of the Off the Shelf festival because it really does bring together authors, writers and other performers of the highest quality to the city for the people of Sheffield's enjoyment."
